The 100 Greatest Video Games of All Times (according to Empire online)

The good people at Empire Online have released a list of their 100 greatest games of all time. After reading this list I agree with much of it, but definitely have a bone to pick about some of their choices. For example: I would have placed Arkham City, Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Final Fantasy III (in America) in the top ten. That being said, they have done a pretty comprehensive job of ranking these games. You can view the full article which includes explanations for each game here; in the meantime, view the list for yourself below:

Star Wars set to redefine storytelling

An article written on Badass digest by Devin Faraci, states that the Star Wars franchise is not only in the right hands, but it could once against breathe life into a series that according to him has been “dead since 1983”. He talks at length about how the Star Wars franchise is going to take a page from Marvel and extend their cannon to cartoons, comics and television. According to Faraci, all of these mediums will be used to tell the story of the universe from here on out. He explains here in a quote from his article

Marvel Studios has shown that multiple franchises can work together to tell one story, and they’ve even played with a bit of transmedia by having Agents of SHIELD peripherally involved. But Star Wars is about to blow that out of the water; there have been big meetings setting the future of the Star Wars universe, and these meetings are going to impact everything we see from Star Wars moving forward. Everything.

“We’re going to redefine longform storytelling,” a Lucasfilm employee boasted to me, and I believe it. For the first time in franchise history, the arc of the new trilogy is planned out in advance. They’re taking this story someplace, not just picking up the loose ends and figuring out where to go next with each new film. Even with the Prequels, which had a predetermined ending, Lucas was kind of making it up as he went along.

That longform vision alone is exciting. But what’s more, they’re going to weave this story through cartoons and books and comics, making every piece of side story count. Star Wars has too long been a central series of movies surrounded by absolutely disposable books, comics and games. No more. You won’t have to know that stuff to follow the main story, but if you do know that stuff you’re going to be rewarded. As a nerd I like knowing that stuff, and I like knowing it counts.

I have to say once again I am voicing my support for this new trilogy. JJ Abrams directing and Laurence Kasdan is doing re-writes on the script (keep in mind he wrote the script for the best of the Star Wars films, The Empire Strikes Back. I am on the verge of predicting that Episode VII will be a breath of fresh air for a franchise that has become stale. I strongly recommend that you read the entire article here.

Trailer for new Stephen King film

Since I am such a huge fan of his writings, I had to post the trailer for the film adaptation of one of Stephen King’s novellas, A Good Marriage. It is the story of a seemingly happy husband and wife until the wife begins to find evidence that her husband is a serial killer whose crimes have gone unpunished for years. The novella itself is very well written, and King himself penned the screenplay. This is the recipe for a great thriller.

Crawl: The Video Game

Here’s one from the theater of the absurd. Recently a friend sent me a link to a multiplayer dungeon game called Crawl. As you are about to see, it’s pretty out there. It harkens back to the old 8-bit games that I loved so much in my youth. It seems to be a pretty cool idea in terms of one person playing the hero, while the others play creatures hell bent on destroying you and taking over your body. The hero’s job is to grab loot and slay things so he can get more items and level up. The creatures’ job is to kill the hero and take his body (at least that’s what I understood from the trailer). It seems like it will be a fun time. Decide for yourself, check out the trailer below:
