At a shareholders meeting, DC released the names of all of its upcoming movies through 2020. Here they are:
2016- Superman v Batman: Dawn of Justice
2017? –Suicide Squad
2017- Wonder Woman
2017- Justice League: Part I
2018- The Flash
2018- Aquaman
2019- Shazaam
2019- Justice League 2
2020- Cyborg
2020- Green Lantern
There are some interesting choices here. Obviously The Suicide Squad is trying to capture the excitement that surrounded Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which also featured a group of relatively unknown superheroes bonding together to fight evil. Splitting up the Justice League pictures may be quite advantageous in terms of being able to give each character the screen time that they deserve. And, from what I understand, Brainiac will serve as the villain for the first film, while Darkseid will be introduced in the second.
One of the films that has me a bit worried is the Aquaman film. Is the world ready for a film that may take place completely underwater? Plus you have the added problem that Aquaman is seen as kind of a wimp, since he cannot do much outside of the water. If they are going to expect people to see this film, then they had better make him a bad ass.
2020 is also going to be interesting for Marvel, with a largely unknown character (to those who did not watch Teen Titans), Cyborg, getting a standalone film. The audience will be introduced to him in the Justice League film, but I’m not sure to what extent. Then it seems that DC will take their second shot at Green Lantern; many of us remember the disaster that occurred the first time that they tried making the film. If you don’t, you can read about it here. We can only assume that they are taking another shot at hopefully they can get it right.
Obviously DC is taking Marvel’s blueprint and following it, the questions remains: will they be as successful? Only time will tell.
