War for the Planet of the Apes trailer

Along with the new Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer (which you can watch here), another major trailer has dropped.  This one for the upcoming third film in the new Planet of the Apes trilogy (maybe?) War for the Planet of the Apes.  This trailer shows us the full blown war between man and ape that the last two films have slowly been building up to.

Woody Harrelson now joins the cast as what appears to the leader of the human armies hellbent on putting an end to the ape uprising.  Once again Andy Serkis (who should have been nominated for an Oscar by this point) takes on both the voice and motion acting for Ceasar, the leader of the ape army.  Hopefully the film can continue the trend of the last two and become a fitting final chapter for this already good trilogy.  View the trailer for yourself below:

Spider-man: Homecoming (the trailer)

After releasing a teaser for a teaser yesterday, the wonderful people at Marvel and Disney have released what looks to be between a trailer and a teaser for their upcoming much anticipated release Spider-man: Homecoming.  The film looks to be a mi of a superhero film and a John Hughes movie.  At the same time, they seem to have captured the look and feel of the teenage angst of a teenage Peter Parker from the comic books.  Also adding to the film is the appearance of Tony Stark, which gives us a pretty amazing final shot in the trailer.  And of course, we also get our first look at Michael Keaton as Vulture. All in all it looks like Marvel has captured the spirit of the character.  Another thought occurred to me though; do you think that part of naming the movie “Homecoming” was to signify that Spider-man has come back to Marvel?  Food for thought.  View the trailer for yourself below:

Transformers: The Last Knight

Michael Bay has debuted the first teaser trailer for the upcoming release of his latest Transformer attempt:  The Last Knight.  This one starts off interestingly enough in the past before delving into the familiar territory of robot on robot, then robot on man violence.  We have all of the cliches here: Josh Duhamel, A beautiful girl, a reluctant hero, and of course the obligatory Michael Bay sunset shot.  What remains to be seen is if this movie can cover new ground that the last couple entries failed to do.  Here’s to hoping…   View for yourself below:

Why Can’t Powerless Superheroes be Poor?

iron-man    As I was listening to an episode of Fatman on Batman (A Kevin Smith podcast); the hosts were talking about comics and something struck me like a bolt of lightning (pun intended).  To be a superhero, one has to have either superpowers or be incredibly rich.  Stop and think about that for a minute.  Right now you are racking your brain trying to think of a superhero that has no superpowers that is not rich.  Batman?  Rich.  Green Arrow?  Rich.  Iron Man? Rich.  Iron Fist? Rich.  Even the Green Hornet is rich.  Both Robin and Nightwing have money by association, as does the new Ant-Man.  Why then are there not more stories about the everyday man without superpowers who decides to fight crime?

Ok, I get it, there are exceptions to this rule i.e. Kick-ass, Punisher, or Falcon.  But those exceptions are few and far between.  Why is this?  Perhaps it has to do with the fact that outside of the last 20 years, there has not been an abundance of minority superheroes.  Or maybe it is the fact that the comic book producers think that the everyday person does not want to be reminded of his or her menial place in life.  Either way I think that comic book companies are missing a major opportunity to develop a hero for the common person.

Those of you reading this who have seen the HBO documentary “Superheroes” know that there is a market out there for people who want to root for the underdog, the average joe who does above average things to protect his or her city from danger.  If you have not seen the documentary, it is about groups of ordinary citizens who put on a wide variety of masks and risk their lives to protect their communities, with a wide range of results.  If that isn’t the public asking for a working-class hero, then what is?

So, I say this to the comic book artists, writers, and publishers.  Let’s see if we can create a true hero without superpowers that is willing to put it all on the line to protect his community and more importantly the world.  Well, maybe he or she can have one superpower, courage.
