Avengers 2 trailer news.

According to Marvel’s Twitter account, the trailer for the upcoming Avengers 2 will be shown during next week’s episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. That means the countdown has officially begun until we get our first look at what will arguably be the 2nd biggest film of 2015 (Yes, number 1 will be Episode VII). Hopefully the teaser or trailer will give us our first look at Ultron. More news as it develops.

DC reveals all of its upcoming films

At a shareholders meeting, DC released the names of all of its upcoming movies through 2020. Here they are:

2016- Superman v Batman: Dawn of Justice

2017? –Suicide Squad

2017- Wonder Woman

2017- Justice League: Part I

2018- The Flash

2018- Aquaman

2019- Shazaam

2019- Justice League 2

2020- Cyborg

2020- Green Lantern

There are some interesting choices here. Obviously The Suicide Squad is trying to capture the excitement that surrounded Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which also featured a group of relatively unknown superheroes bonding together to fight evil. Splitting up the Justice League pictures may be quite advantageous in terms of being able to give each character the screen time that they deserve. And, from what I understand, Brainiac will serve as the villain for the first film, while Darkseid will be introduced in the second.

One of the films that has me a bit worried is the Aquaman film. Is the world ready for a film that may take place completely underwater? Plus you have the added problem that Aquaman is seen as kind of a wimp, since he cannot do much outside of the water. If they are going to expect people to see this film, then they had better make him a bad ass.

2020 is also going to be interesting for Marvel, with a largely unknown character (to those who did not watch Teen Titans), Cyborg, getting a standalone film. The audience will be introduced to him in the Justice League film, but I’m not sure to what extent. Then it seems that DC will take their second shot at Green Lantern; many of us remember the disaster that occurred the first time that they tried making the film. If you don’t, you can read about it here. We can only assume that they are taking another shot at hopefully they can get it right.

Obviously DC is taking Marvel’s blueprint and following it, the questions remains: will they be as successful? Only time will tell.

The Marvel Civil War is coming

The news broke this morning that Robert Downey Jr. is in final negotiations to star in Captain America 3. It seems as if they are finally going to attempt putting the Marvel Civil War (or a portion of it) on the big screen. For those of you who are not familiar with the storyline for the Marvel Civil War, I will attempt to explain. In the wake of a terrible accident in New York which kills many innocent people, the government enacts the superhero registration act, which would require all superheroes to register with the government and reveal their secret identities. Obviously this was Marvel’s attempt at satirizing the 9/11 tragedy and the ensuing Patriot act. Half of the superheroes, led by Tony Stark, have no problem with the act and sign up to register. The other half, led by Steve Rogers (Captain America), refuse to sign up citing that it is un-American and it would put them in danger. The government eventually comes to Stark and tells him that his group needs to bring in the other group because they are in violation of the law. Thus begins the civil war

The interesting issue here is that the Marvel Civil War involved the entire Marvel universe, which could not be done on screen for a multitude of reasons the least of which is that different properties are owned by different studios. So the question is going to be how much can they show of it, and which superheroes are going to be involved? Whatever the answer may be it seems as this may be the most ambitious project that Marvel is going to undertake.

Labyrinth gets a sequel?

An article on I09 points out that there is currently a sequel in the works for not only Labyrinth but also for The Dark Crystal, and a Fraggle Rock movie could be on the way. Now, take a deep breath. For those of you who grew up in the 80’s and early 90’s, that was a lot of information to absorb in a short amount of time. Granted, just because something is in development does not mean that it will make its way to the big screen, but at least this gives us hope.

If Labyrinth does make it way back into theaters, I pray that Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie return, because without them, we might have another Return to Oz (look it up);
not that Return to Oz is not a cult classic, but it’s definitely not The Wizard of Oz. I simply hope this news is true, and they can treat the material with the respect it deserves, and of course they include David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. Cheers.
